Huntington Junior College Computer Information Systems

CS 232 Microcomputer Principles/4 (30-30)
Surveys the fundamentals of data processing on microcomputers. Students gain understanding of and facility in using computer hardware, operating systems, and common software applications through lecture, discussion, and hands-on practice. This course is intended to be practical and useful to any student, regardless of his or her major field of study.

CS 234 Data Base Management/4 (30-30)
Refines the skills and knowledge attained in CS 232. Extensive practice is provided in creating, accessing, and managing databases, as well as lecture and discussion on database techniques.
Prerequisite: CS 232

CS 235 Spreadsheet Applications/4 (30-30)
Involves advanced application of spreadsheets to the solution of business problems. Numerical analysis and forecasting are analyzed along with charting figures and utilizing spreadsheet programs for database.
Prerequisite: CS 232

CS 238 Office Automation and Design/4
Encompasses the effective use of data processing equipment, management techniques, and hands-on use of automated decision-making tools. Includes analysis of systems taken from business and industry. Guides the students through the development of a business system analysis and implementation of information processing systems.

CS 248 Internet Research/4 (30-30)
Refines the knowledge of how to conduct searches on the World Wide Web and dealing with tools such as directories and search engines. Students will be able to navigate the web and critically assess the quality of material found there.
Prerequisite: WP 150
CS 254 Visual BASIC (30-30)
Deals with studying programming techniques in a graphical object-oriented environment. Students develop a variety of business solutions in languages that prevail in the graphical areas of systems development.

CS 255 Visual Studio Programming/4 (30-30)
Introduces students to a variety of programming languages found in the Visual Studio packages.
Prerequisite: CS 254

CS 257 Application Development with Visual BASIC/4 (30-30)
Correlates students programming skills in Visual BASIC with their knowledge of construction, use, and maintenance of databases. Students will create a menudriven system of data tables by implementing a fusion of Visual BASIC, SQL, and Access.
Prerequisite: CS 254 & CS 261 (may be taken concurrently)

CS 258 Web Design I/4 (30-30)
This class will offer basic web design principles, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) fundamentals and web site file structure. Students will acquire proficiency in using Microsoft Front Page, the most popular web design WYSIWYG software. By the end of class, students will be able to create a fully functioning web site.
Prerequisite: CS 232

CS 259 Advanced Web Design/4 (30-30)
Continues Web Design I and introduces the student to web application. Students learn to incorporate advanced features to their web site created in Web Design I class. By the end of this class, students will be able to transfer (upload) their web site to a web server.
Prerequisite: CS 258

CS 261 SQL & Database Design/4 (30-30)
SQL (Structured Query Language) is the platform language for all database application programs. Students will learn and practice the fundamental coding and database design principles to enable them to plan, create, modify, and access databases.
Prerequisite: CS 234

CS 264 Advanced Database Management/4 (30-30)
This class begins where Database Management ends. Students learn and practice advanced database management techniques such as database normalization, relational database analysis and design, using calculated fields, resolving multi-part and multi-valued fields, and application of business rules to database projects.
Prerequisite: CS 261 & CS 234

CS 272 Graphics for Multimedia and the WWW/4 (30-30)
This course provides students with a primer on the basic elements of design such as typography (text and display sizes), images, principles of color theory and layout. Students will learn important design techniques, visual thinking, concept development, and composition. By the end of the course, students will be able to create clear, intelligent and powerful graphic communication for both the web and print media using Swish, a Macromedia Flash WYSIWYG vector based animation tool software.
Prerequisite: CS 232
